“Ummah” means community, and with that word top of mind, brothers Jawad, Shahwali, and Naser established the first Ummah Market in Richmond, Virginia in 2020. As immigrants from Afghanistan, they were inspired and motivated by the power of diversity, trust, and hope, and sought to create a space in the heart of Virginia where everyone would feel welcome.

At Ummah Market, we believe that using our decades of hard, learned experience to serve our community is the most satisfying endeavor. In our journey to the USA, we have recognized that one of the biggest issues in this country is that there is not enough quality, fresh food readily available for the people. Thus, we’ve made it our mission to make that happen wherever we can.

We are also committed to creating a space where everyone feels welcome and has access to hard-to-find products that will remind people of old times or memories from back home. In this endeavor, we also aim to set the bar high among ethnic stores like ours, and be an inspiration for others.
